The Home Secretary Priti Patel has confirmed that almost everyone arriving in the UK will have to go into quarantine for 14 days to combat the spread of coronavirus. However the plan has been heavily criticised by MPs from all parties including senior Conservatives — and by the tourism industry.
Opponents have said the measure has come too late, will not be effective and will deter people from visiting the UK and damage the tourism industry.
There will be £1,000 fines for people who don’t comply with the new rules and they could face prosecution.
Meanwhile questions have been raised about the test and trace system to combat the spread of Covid-19. The Prime Minister had pledged that a “world beating” contact tracing system would be in place by June 1st.
However the woman in charge of it has been unable to provide MPs with key information about how the system is working.
